In addition to their relationship with these metabolic changes, fasting triglycerides strongly correlate with other adverse, and more complex, lipid profile changes that are less easily measured (e.g. Chronically elevated fasting triglycerides in the absence of a genetic lipid disorder are associated with some degree of metabolic derangement, which can include long-term positive energy balance and adipose tissue expansion, hepatic steatosis and subsequent very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) oversecretion and/or insulin resistance ( 1, 7– 16). Triglycerides >1⋅70 mmol/l (150 mg/dl) are also one criterion for diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome and are frequently observed in those with type 2 diabetes ( 3– 6). High fasting triglycerides have been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) since the 1950s, and nearly one-third of Americans display elevated triglycerides (>1⋅70 mmol/l or 150 mg/dl) ( 1, 2). We also present data suggesting that there may be a distinct advantage of postprandial triglycerides, even over non-fasting triglycerides, for early detection of CVD risk and offer suggestions to make postprandial protocols more clinically feasible. ![]() Here, we review differences in assessment, the underlying physiology and the pathophysiological relevance of elevated fasting, non-fasting and postprandial triglycerides. A third type of triglyceride assessment, postprandial testing, is more controlled, yet historically has been difficult to implement due to the time and effort required to execute it. ![]() However, unstandardised assessment protocols associated with non-fasting triglyceride measurement may lead to misclassification, with at-risk individuals being overlooked. measured within 8 h of eating) better predict CVD than fasting triglycerides, which has led several organisations to recommend non-fasting lipid panels as the new clinical standard. In my opinion it was over priced as other TAs have written about the other food vendors here, and the Tinned player was not very generous in portion. (Our experience might have been totally different if we had had to wander around for a long time looking for a place to sit or if our dining companions had been awful.) The one aspect we weren’t thrilled about was how one gets his/her drink: you pay where you buy your food, but you get the drink from one of the two bars set up at the ends of the seating area. Grateful dead songbook bdf12/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Just a knack, but it’s small wonder that my songs are often fraught with allusions. I also absorbed the lyrics to an untold number of folk songs during the folk revival of the sixties. I knew the words to most of the popular songs of the forties and fifties and to most of the classics of the swing era, through my parents’ record collection (also strong in folk music) and through playing through “fake books” of the era on my trumpet. My particular strength was a good memory. Several of us were veterans of regular jazz sessions by sterling musicians such as Lester Hellum, Bob Pringle, Rudy Jackson, and Dan Barnett while living at the Chateau. Mickey Hart was a titled world-champion rudimental drummer from a family of drummers and studied Indian rhythmic intricacies with Zakir Hussein and Ali Akbar Khan. Garcia’s knowledge and facility with American folk forms and instrumental styles was compendious. Phil studied composition with the great Italian avant-garde composer Luciano Berio to augment his classical training. Pigpen played blues and was accepted as a regular in the black nightclubs of East Palo Alto in his early teens. Most bands can be copied, but bands that have tried to mimic the Grateful Dead in a creative way, other than note-by-note reproduction, tend to fall short of the mark because there is no specific style to mimic, rather a range of styles that the band members have individually mastered and integrated into the music. But jazz wasn’t talking to pop, and bluegrass wasn’t talking to the blues-experimental postclassic soundscape wasn’t talking to anybody. My own improbable dream was to aid and abet a unified indigenous American, or at least Western, music, drawing on all bona fide traditional currents including pop. I’m optimistically uncertain as to whether it is a dead issue or a ticking time bomb set to detonate long after its progenitors have quit this sphere of commercial sorrow. Its verbal and musical complexity offer little of overwhelming market value to a more intensely stratified current musical culture. It was, in its day, as shockingly innovative as the music of mounting urban psychosis that was to displace it. But it bears mentioning that our work was a natural and inevitable blending of rock and roll, jazz, and traditional folk culture. It begins to appear that our output embodied the summation and close of a musical era, rather than heralding the bright new beginning devoutly wished for. The songlist of the Grateful Dead has achieved an anomalous status within the archives of current pop culture. There are as many ways as there are listeners. There is more than one way to love a song. When scholars hear a song they like, they annotate it. Hat, after all, is the point of a compendium of scatology and ontology viz the lyrics of the Grateful Dead? When fans hear a song they like, they internalize it, dance to it, sing along. And the annotations on sources provide a gloss on the lyrics, which goes to the roots of Western culture as they are incorporated into them.Īn avid Grateful Dead concertgoer for more than two decades, David Dodd is a librarian who brings to the work a detective’s love of following a clue as far as it will take him. How do they do all this? To provide a context for this formidable body of work, of which his part is primary, Robert Hunter has written a foreword that goes to the heart of the matter. They are hummed and spoken among thousands as counterculture code and recorded by musicians of all stripes for their inimitable singability and obscure accessibility. These are some of the best-loved songs in the modern American songbook. ![]() The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics is an authoritative text, providing standard versions of all the original songs you thought you knew forwards and backwards. Over that time, my process has improved and evolved. It’s now been more than a decade since I started my paperless lifestyle and transformed my creaky old filing cabinets into a digital filing cabinet. How Going Paperless Has Changed Over the Last Decade I knew that little scanner could transform not only my work, but also how I dealt with all our paper clutter and filing cabinets at home. I couldn’t wait to tell Abby about this landman and his scanner. It was obvious to me that his process was much more efficient and organized than my process. Instead of photocopying piles of paperwork and documents, he would scan everything and leave the courthouse with only digital copies. But inside the bag was a small portable scanner. It looked like one of those bags that soccer players use to carry their cleats. He arrived at the courthouse with his laptop as well as a small black bag. I would find the documents I needed, feed coins into the copy machine, and make piles of copies that I could then take back to the office.Įventually I started to notice one particular landman that had a very intriguing process for dealing with the mountains of paper. Part of my duties involved researching legal documents at the courthouse. My “Aha” MomentĪround this same time I had somewhat of an “aha” moment at work. I had failed miserably at organizing our paper. If I needed to retrieve a document, it would very easily take me 15 minutes or more to find what I needed. And eventually spilling over onto the desk. But gradually paper began to stack up first on top of the filing cabinets. ![]() We had two small filing cabinets in the corner. Over time, the paper clutter in that office became so bad that I couldn’t even stand the thought of going into that room. One of the upstairs bedrooms was designated as my office. We lived in a small townhouse at the time. I tried to take ownership of the filing and paper organizing duties, but I failed miserably. ![]() They were all “important” documents that I knew we needed to keep as adults with our own household. You know, that point where everything feels like utter chaos and you don’t know if you’ll ever be able to get it under control.Įarly in our marriage, Abby and I started accumulating quite a bit of paper. Why We Decided to Go Paperless in the First Placeīefore I realized my need for a paperless lifestyle, I had to reach an organizational breaking point. For more information, see my disclosures here. Going Paperless and Creating a Digital Filing Cabinet With all of these changes, I asked him if he would do a complete overhaul on his paperless post to update it with the latest information, and he gladly agreed.
